OBA instructors are cutting edge, use analytics, and individualize instruction to develop players. As a staff, our goal is to enable each player to get to the next level by arming them with the skills and knowledge it takes to get into a college and/or professional baseball.. Our staff have come from many baseball backgrounds. Many of which have played or coached professionally. Our staff also includes many of the top high school coaches in Central Florida area. Because of our diverse backgrounds and experience, we have a vast array of college contacts across the country. Because our commitment to players and player development, we are a nationally recognized travel organization.
MEET OUR DIRECTORS
Jim Osting
Is a Nationally recognized coach w/ 12 years of professional baseball experience. He grew up in Louisville, KY playing baseball and working in his family’s bakery. He attended Trinity High School in Louisville, KY where he was an all-state selection his Jr. and Sr. years. To this day, he still holds several records as an alumnus including the single-season ERA 0.09. After high school, he committed to Clemson University, but chose to forgo this commitment in lieu of getting drafted in the 4th round of the 1995 MLB Draft with the Atlanta Braves.
He signed w/ the Atlanta Braves and spent 5 seasons in that organization. Though he endured Tommy John surgery in 1997, he made it into Baseball America’s Top 10 prospects in the Atlanta Braves Organization. Later earning the Brave’s 1999 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Throughout his playing career, he closely worked w/ many of the great names in baseball including pitching coach Leo Mazzoni, pitchers – Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and manager Bobby Cox. Osting played professionally with the following organizations:
- Atlanta Braves,
- Philadelphia Phillies,
- Colorado Rockies,
- San Diego Padres (where he made his MLB debut),
- Milwaukee Brewers (major league time),
- Kansas City Royals,
- Tampa Bay Rays
Osting has had 20+ years coaching baseball. Since his retirement from professional baseball in 2005, he has turned his efforts to player development. Since founding OBA in 2008, his coaching has built Nationally ranked travel programs from 8-18U and those players have moved on to make huge impacts in collegiate and professional ranks. Ostingers Baseball program, since it’s inception has been built on a culture based on team first , integrity, and a winning environment. Not only learning baseball skills but life skills to lead to success in all aspects. In his continued efforts to stay cutting edge, Osting has been a consultant for several MLB organizations and collegiate programs.
Patrick Ryan
Grew up in Brooksville, FL and attended Central High School where he lettered in baseball for 3 years. From there he received a scholarship to play at Lake Sumter State College in Leesburg, FL. After his 2 years there he signed to play at Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach, FL. His junior season he was 1st team All American and helped his team to a 52-10 record and a 3rd place finish at the NAIA World Series. His senior season Patrick garnered 2nd team All American honors and again help post a 52-10 record. That season the Eagles earned 2nd place at the World Series.
After his senior season, Patrick was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 19th round of the 2005 Amateur Draft. Patrick played 4 seasons with the Brewers organization reaching AA Huntsville in 2008 and making the AA All-Star team. He was then selected in the Rule 5 Draft that offseason by the Seattle Mariners where he played the 2009 season for AA Jackson, TN. Also that season Patrick played for the Bridgeport, CT Bluefish of the Atlantic League. In the 2010 season, Patrick started back in Bridgeport but was signed by the Boston Red Sox in a midseason acquisition. He retired after the 2011 season where he became a full-time instructor at OBA. During his playing days, he spent his off-seasons giving lessons at Ostingers and has become an important part of the OBA staff at college showcases, summer camps, and giving individual lessons. He feels it is important to give back his knowledge and enjoys staying close to the game he loves.
Ryan was inducted in the 2023 Lake Sumter State College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mike Heath
Mike Heath, a Tampa native, went Hillsborough High School and was committed to play Football and Baseball at FSU. Instead, he was drafted 2nd round of 1973 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees.
Heath had a stellar 15 year Major League career with
- New York Yankees ( 1978 World Series Champs)
- Oakland Athletics
- St Louis Cardinals
- Detroit Tigers
- Atlanta Braves
- Texas Rangers
During his playing time, Heath played every position on the field except for pitcher and first base, but catching was where he spent most of his time – with over 1000 games caught at the MLB level.
Heath has been recognized as one of the top defensive catchers in the game.
